I've been reading Ernest Hemingway's The First Forty Nine Stories, here's some drawings I made of the characters from Old Man At The Bridge, based on Hemingway's experiences as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War. The story follows a Republican soldier speaking to an old man on the Ebro Bridge who had to leave his farm animals behind in his village due to the combat taking place. The man states he has no politics, and has no idea if his animals will survive, a powerful piece of writing about innocents caught up in war.

For these watercolour studies I researched what kind of kit Republican forces would've worn, their uniforms varied depending on their factions within the Republican side and local militias were formed so they often wore civilian clothing. In my research I also read about the 'Mexican Suitcase', a collection of 4,500 recovered film negatives taken by photographers Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and Chim (David Seymour), documenting the Spanish Civil War.
